In October we travelled to Manchester and Liverpool with a Dutch LSH delegation. With a shared interest in the themes e-Health, MedTech and Healthy Ageing within healthcare, we were welcomed by intriguing stakeholders within the Liverpool area. The objective of this fact-finding mission was to discuss the challenges within the UK healthcare system and to explore and stimulate British-Dutch cooperation to provide smart solutions for these challenges. High-level stakeholders from NBSO Manchester, Health Innovation North West Coast, Chesire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, UK Research and Innovation, ORCHA, Growth Platform, Alder Hey Innovation Hospital, the Walton Centre and Sci-Tech Daresbury presented the UK care models, innovative technologies and the possibilities of international collaboration.
The visits underscored the significance of blending technology and interdisciplinary methods to demonstrate how UK healthcare is open to innovative solutions, addressing the needs of the population. This fact-finding mission served as an excellent forum for both nations to enhance their practical collaborations.
UK has proved to be an attractive destination to enter due to the presence of many innovative healthcare providers and the large Manchester and Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trusts. Digitalization and new technology, often driven by artificial intelligence and robotics, are believed to be critical enablers to ensure accessibility, affordability and quality of care. By investing in them now, we can help put the Netherlands in an excellent starting position to benefit together from the UK’s investment in LSH innovations. However, UK continues to grapple with challenges, including a swiftly aging population. Recognizing the need for continued growth and improvement, the Dutch delegation was eager to explore opportunities for collaboration and gain insights into the latest digital innovations being introduced in NHS settings. By understanding and leveraging these advancements, the delegation aims to further bridge the gaps in healthcare delivery within the UK, especially for underserved populations and the elderly, ultimately striving for better health outcomes and enhanced well-being for citizens.
