USA | Strategic Multi-annual Market approach | Life Sciences & Health

The United States (US) has the highest healthcare expenditure globally, presenting significant opportunities for Dutch Life Sciences and Health (LSH) companies. Additionally, the US offers a robust investment landscape for innovative medical technologies. The combination of market size, growth potential, and investment readiness makes the US an attractive destination for Dutch LSH organizations seeking expansion, collaboration, research, and innovation opportunities. Through the SMM LSH US you can learn about key developments, establish sustainable (research) collaborations, and strengthen your position on the US healthcare market.

What is the SMM LSH United States?

The SMM LSH US is a Strategic Multi-annual Market approach (SMM) coordinated by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and Task Force Health Care (TFHC). It is a public-private approach to position Dutch LSH companies in the sub-sectors of digital health and MedTech. The geographical focus is on Texas and California, existing connections and strategic collaborations in the two states form a solid foundation for deepening the relations and scaling Dutch LSH organizations in the US. From December 2024 to December 2027, a broad variety of activities will be organized for Dutch LSH organizations to support with market entry and/or scale-up in the US

What to expect?

The Netherlands Business Support Office (NBSO) in Los Angeles, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), and Task Force Health Care (TFHC) will organize the LSH mission to California as part of the multiannual SMM LSH United States program.
During this visit, various stakeholders in Los Angeles will be visited, among others private hospitals and important health networks. The program is still under development but will include:

  • Site visits in and around Los Angeles to private hospitals, universities, and health networks
  • Roundtable discussions on technology and investment trends, FDA certification, and possible collaboration opportunities
  • Networking meetings

Building on the momentum of the LSH mission, we are excited to highlight the synergy with the upcoming ScaleNL event: the Cedars-Sinai x NBSO LA x ScaleNL: Healthtech Mini-Accelerator 2025. This collaboration offers participants enhanced networking opportunities, valuable contacts, and knowledge exchange within the LA healthcare ecosystem.

What is the objective of the program?

The overall objective of the SMM program is to improve the competitive strength of the Dutch LSH sector in the US and to contribute to the growth of the Netherlands as one of the strongest LSH hubs worldwide. To achieve this objective, an action plan with several complementary activities has been designed in close collaboration with the Dutch LSH sector. The activities have the aim to improve the positioning of the Dutch LSH sector, to foster economic growth, to attract foreign direct investment, and to strengthen research and development collaboration.
