South Africa is widely regarded as the economic and healthcare hub of Southern Africa. Healthcare provision in South Africa is split between what can be broadly characterised as a well-funded private sector and a resource-constrained public sector. Both sectors present potential markets for Dutch expertise and solutions, with some overlap and some differences in the types of solutions required in the two sectors. However, doing projects and business in South Africa can be challenging. And it is expected that the government’s proposed National Health Insurance (NHI) programme, if implemented, will fundamentally alter the way both the public and private sector operate.
